 | After
crossing through the tunel, the Canal opens to the Arsenal marina. This port is
the only real marina in Paris. It can accomodate more than 200 boats. A nice sidewalk
goes all along the marina with the Bastille in the background. At the end of the
port, we have found a strange "shantytown" boat. It seems to fluctuate correctly!
The Canal continues its route under the Bastille, reappearing at the end of the
Boulevard Richard Lenoir. This was done in 1859, under Haussmann orders. Here
starts the real open-skies Canal St-Martin. The covered part (from Bastille) is
now the Richard Lenoir Boulevard. This was done in the middle of XIXth century
to allow the reunification of the outside districts to the city. There are 9 locks
to face the 25 m level difference. The Canal crosses here the "10ème arrondissement"
a very working-class district. All along, footbridges and bridges allow the inhabitants
and pedestrians to cross the Canal. They also give a nice global view of the Canal
course. And the Canal goes further, another time underground, just to pass under
Stalingrad crossroads. | www.hotel-week-end.com
